I’m working through my skills action plan (I made mine at the end of 2021 – a list of skills I want to work on with specific projects that will make me improve), this time by focusing on drawing spaces and geometry! A great skill to have in film and theatre and practice that I really enjoy.
I worked through an online ‘Architectural Design Course’ focusing on drawing spaces in perspective.
While often taught with more of a “show don’t tell” quick approach, it covered perspective drawing from the very basics and then moved to more complex ideas. Now having finished it I feel like it’s given me a good basis for drawing spaces! It starts with basic rules and terms – escape points, one/two/three point perspectives, page-slicing, drawing different shapes in perspective etc. It makes these basics increasingly complex and works them into larger drawings of interior/exterior design.
I must say I really enjoyed it! I find joy in both arty and technical skills – I like the free sensation of drawing and creating, but also drawing straight lines and shapes, where in order to align them correctly you have to use your logical eye. I’ve always been able to imagine spaces easily (nostalgic wink to my geometry classes which I always loved) and now to learn the rules and techniques to draw them correctly has been a really satisfying process.
